
when can i drive?
At least twice a week we are asked if a client can drive the vehicle with no registration to our shop for an inspection, but did you know all the rules that apply to getting a vehicle registered?
We found the RMS website link that allows you to drive your vehicle.
Reading the information in the PDF document will help when trying to determine the source of the fault, not necessarily is the catalyst at fault there are many variables.
The first three bullet points on the list would be the hardest to test as these require testing before and after the cat converter with 5 gas analyser, the time to set up a vehicle would be a challenge.
To add to this the disappointment when you realise it is a v6 or v8 engine, this makes the setup to the vehicle even harder.
Vehicle
Holden Cruize, 2009, F18D Engine
Symptom:
The vehicle shows a check engine light on the dash board, the fault code is p2096 the description is post catalyst fuel trim system low limit.
the driving technique to make the symptom reoccur is warm up the vehicle so both o2 sensors front and rear are ready to send signal back to PCM, drive for 5 mins and drive to 80 kmh and back off the accelerator this will see that the o2 sensor both reach 0.00v when the vehicle is stopped and back to idle the front o2 sensor will start to cycle again, the rear o2 sensor will be at 0.12v – 0.18v and steady generally the voltage will take a while to rise, back to normal of 0.76v which is in the normal range of operation.
after this the check engine light will not come on the dash board but the fault code p2096 will be set in the PCM, during the test drive if you clear and carry out the same road test it will also be set again as the issue is still the same. this method of testing was the only way I could reproduce the fault time and time again.

Remote Key Re-Initialise – If a key fails to operate remotely, it will have to be re-initialised (all keys in sequence at the same time)
1. Get in and “close all doors”
2. Turn ignition on & off quickly (no more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds
ALL Toyota Key Remote Programming.
1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.

Volkswagon Golf 1KZ 2008, TSI BLG engine
Symptom:
Engine light on, and vehicle responsiveness a little slow
The Vehicle had been bought to the workshop to find out why the engine light is coming on, a quick scan revealed a 08213 error also known as p2105 fault intake manifold flap position sensor fault improbable.
After trawling the internet for hours looking for a specification of oil for Volkswagen DSG gearboxs, instead i found Mercedes benz oil chart, which shows all the specifications Mercedes recommend for what particular frame chassis. having owning an S -class Mercedes it poked my interest to see if was using the minimum or maximum specification that we currently use in the workshop today, i did find that even in a slightly older vehicle with our Sydney climate i could use a slightly heavier oil viscosity, having using at least a 229.3 spec oil, i still wasn’t happy with amount of zero weight oils such as 0w-40 in my opinion this is far to thin for Sydney’s climate hence we have been suing 5w40’s and 10w40’s mostly.
So just to be sure next time you need to find the oil specifications for any lubricant, such as engine oil, auto oil or coolant, be sure to open up the pdf and check what specifications you must use as a minimum, check the viscosity chart for temperature of your climate and also remember that an engine that has done 20,000 kms is totally different to and engine that has done 200,000 kms. Apart from all the above information the only other thing as a repairer we can tell you is to listen with your ears and notice what sounds the engine makes this will help in giving you the best outcome.
